Roenick Inches Closer to 500

When the San Jose Sharks signed Jeremy Roenick toward the end of the summer on a bargain-basement deal, most saw it as a move born out of pity from an old friend, general manager Doug Wilson, who played with the now grizzled veteran during their glory days in Chicago.

Few thought it would mean much on the ice, and the over/under on how long it would take Roenick to reach 500 goals - he had a mere five to hit one of hockey's most noted milestones - sat somewhere close to half a season.

Two games in, he's already potted a goal a game, and could be well on his way to being a depth contributer on a pretty good Sharks team.

Roenick scored twice on Friday night in Vancouver, putting his team up 3-0 a little more than 15 minutes into the game and showing he's still got a little more veteran savvy. Coach Ron Wilson even had him out there during a power play, and it paid off.

It was just his second multi-goal game in two years.

Roenick only played 9:47 the night before in Edmonton, and wasn't slated to play at all heading into the start of the regular season this week until rookie Devin Setoguchi hurt his ankle.

Now he's seeing some time on a line with Torrey Mitchell and Milan Michalek, two kids who were three- and four-years-old when Roenick broke into the league with the Blackhawks.

Now at 497 and counting, it's probably safe to say Roenick's guaranteed himself a spot in the lineup, at least for a little while, and 500's a lot closer than any of us thought.
